FTPA Welcomes Malik Idri as Partner and Mathieu Relange as Counsel

February 3 2025

FTPA is delighted to announce the arrival of Malik Idri as Partner and Mathieu Relange as Counsel. This accomplished duo, with complementary expertise, will strengthen the firm’s capabilities in competition law and exemplifies FTPA’s commitment to providing innovative, top-tier legal solutions to its clients.

Malik Idri brings nearly 15 years of experience in cartel and abuse of dominance litigation before the French Competition Authority and the European Commission. After starting his career at Clifford Chance, he spent eight years at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, where he became a partner in January 2022. A member of the Paris Bar since 2012, he holds a PhD in Law from the University of Aix-Marseille and a Master’s in International Business Law from ESSEC.

He advises major French and international companies across strategic sectors such as telecommunications, tech, energy, and transportation. Malik has distinguished himself as counsel in high-profile cases, including Google Shopping and Google Android (resulting in €1.8 billion and €5 billion fines, respectively, imposed by the European Commission), as well as proceedings against Orange in France. In December 2023, he secured one of the rare dismissals issued by the French Competition Authority in a public procurement cartel case involving a CAC 40 company.

With over 12 years of experience in competition law damages litigation, Malik has contributed to significant successes, such as the recent €26.5 million fine imposed on Google in favor of a competitor in the online advertising sector. Recognized by The Legal 500 as a “Next Generation Partner” in 2024, he is acclaimed as an “expert in antitrust damages litigation.” In December 2024, he participated in drafting the new protocol for substantive litigation signed between the Paris Bar and the Paris Commercial Court.

His practice also covers all aspects of merger control, including notifications to relevant authorities, transaction structuring, and foreign investment and subsidy control. Malik has advised on numerous complex transactions that underwent detailed scrutiny and commitments in key sectors such as industry, retail, and telecommunications.

An Associate Lecturer at the University of Aix-Marseille, Malik is actively involved with the Institute of Business Law (IDA) and regularly publishes in specialized legal journals, including the Chronique du contentieux indemnitaire des pratiques anticoncurrentielles in Concurrences.

“Joining FTPA marks a key milestone in my career, giving me the freedom to practice within a forward-looking, agile firm renowned for its excellence. I’m excited to contribute to our clients’ success in an ever-changing economic environment,” says Malik.

Mathieu Relange brings a unique perspective, combining academic expertise, in-depth knowledge of business operations, and high-level institutional experience. After ten years in Brussels at leading international firms such as Cleary Gottlieb and Bird & Bird, he joined the legal department of the French Competition Authority as a référendaire. This role placed him at the heart of the Authority’s decision-making process, where he also represented it in proceedings before judicial review courts.

A graduate in Modern Literature and an alumnus of the École Normale Supérieure, Mathieu holds a Master’s in Public Law from Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University and an LL.M. in Competition Law and Intellectual Property from New York University (NYU). Admitted to the Paris Bar since 2011, he combines extensive advisory experience with a profound understanding of institutional dynamics and contemporary economic and legal challenges.

His expertise spans a wide range of competition law matters, including anti-competitive practices, cartels, abuse of dominance, merger control, state aid, and foreign subsidies. He also provides strategic advice on the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

“Joining FTPA allows me to bring my institutional and international experience to new clients within a renowned, dynamic, and innovative firm. I’m truly excited to return to private practice and support our clients with their competition, development, and innovation challenges,” says Mathieu.

Together, Malik Idri and Mathieu Relange aim to build a team capable of guiding clients through the most complex competition law challenges. Their complementary skills, enriched by international experience and deep regulatory insight, enable them to combine excellence with agility. Driven by a shared ambition, they are committed to establishing FTPA as a leading firm in competition law.

“The complementarity, expertise, and human qualities of Malik and Mathieu, along with their intellectual rigor and academic engagement, align perfectly with FTPA’s values,” says Antoine Tchekhoff, Founding Partner.

“We look forward to working with Malik and Mathieu, supporting them as they build a team of excellence, and further enhancing our competition law practice for the benefit of our clients,” adds Nathalie Younan, Partner in Corporate M&A.
